What are FODMAPs?

A simple introduction to the five groups of fermentable carbohydrates that can trigger IBS symptoms.

The basics

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. These are short-chain carbohydrates that some people struggle to digest.

When FODMAPs reach your large intestine undigested, gut bacteria ferment them. This process produces gas and draws water into your bowel. For people with IBS, this can trigger bloating, cramps, diarrhea, or constipation.

Not everyone reacts to all FODMAPs. That's why the low-FODMAP protocol helps you identify your personal triggers.
